MIM’s Hindu candidate defeats Congress Muslim candidate in local election

By TwoCircles.net Staff Reporter,

Hyderabad: The result of the By-election of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Borabanda 104 ward seat came as a huge moral boost for Majlis-e-Itehadul Muslimeen(MIM) where its OBC Hindu women candidate V. Bhanumathi won with a big margin of votes.

Majlis candidate Bhanumathi defeated her closet rival, Congress party’s candidate Hajira Sultana by 1,282 votes. Borabanda municipal seat which is reserved for women candidates witnessed a tough fight where 12,000 votes were cast out of 24,000 electorates, the victor V. Bhanumathi got 5,241 votes, Hajira Sultana got 3,959 votes, TDP candidate A.K. Kavita 2,438 votes, while candidates from other parties like BJP, JDU, Lok Satta lost their deposits.

After her victory Ms. Bhanumathi took out a rally from Yousufguda to MIM headquarter DaraulSalam where many MIM leaders and activists garlanded her and congratulated her. MIM Assembly floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi also met her in his office and applauded her for the victory.

Ms. Bhanumathi won the By-election but it will take time for her to get the official certificate as litigation to the By-election is pending in the High Court. The By election was called after the disqualification of sitting counselor C. Vanaja by the High Court for having more than two children. MIM candidate Bhanumathi in 2009 municipal polls contested against congress candidate Vanaja but lost with just 600 votes.

After the by elections was announced MIM and Congress made it a personal affair after parting ways with each other. MIM was desperate to make a Hindu women candidate get elected on their ticket to give a loud message after its leader Akbaruddin Owaisi hate speech controversy. Party president Asaduddin Owaisi and General Secretary Ahmed Pasha Quadri personally campaigned for many days in the constituency. Whereas Congress party by fielding Muslim candidate and registering win wanted to ascertain that Muslims are with Congress, despite MIM’s departure from the alliance.

The caste of Ms. Bhanumathi also holds significance for MIM as party is trying hard to attract Dalits and OBC’s into its fold. Borabanda municipal constituency is important for MIM as it falls under Jubliee Hills assembly constituency, where in the upcoming state election Majlis is planning to field party’s OBC Hindu face G.V.G Naidu.
