Aligarh: The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah has expelled Hammad Nabi, student of MSW and former Honorary Secretary, AMU Students’ Union from the rolls of the University for five academic sessions.
According to a notification issued by the University Proctor, Hammad Nabi was found prima facie guilty of gross misconduct and indiscipline punishable under various clauses of AMU Students’ Conduct and Discipline Rules, 1985.
The notification stated that Nabi, after having been suspended from the University rolls on July 21, 2012, was given fair chances to plead innocence before the Discipline Committee held twice on December 30, 2012 and January 8, 2013 but he did not appear before the committee.
The Vice Chancellor, on the recommendation of the members of the Discipline Committee, hence expelled Nabi, taking into account his non-appearance before the Discipline Committee. University administration, however, added that Nabi has the right to appeal before the Executive Council within three months from the date of receipt of this order.
Hammad Nabi had a different version to tell though.
Nabil told TCN, “The said act of indiscipline was when I, as Secretary of the Students’ Union, went to talk to Prof. Hamdi Ali, Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Technology at the university in connection with two alleged molestation cases, which are still pending in the National Commission for Women. He then filed a false complaint against me of manhandling him, and the Vice Chancellor suspended me without giving me any show cause notice.”
He even rejected the charges that he failed to appear before the Discipline Committee. “I got neither any letter, nor any call, how would I appear?” he asks.
When asked, if he is planning to appeal to the University administration or to go to court against the order, Nabi replied in negation. “If the VC does not want me in the campus, then be it. I was honestly doing my work for the welfare of the students in the campus, but I do not now want to go back to a campus which would not allow me even the space to ask questions.”
Nabi has joined Samajwadi Party and is currently working in Bareilly.
