Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University Students’ Union today organized a Symposium on Restoration of AMU’s Minority character.
It was resolved that AMU Students’ Union will launch a massive movement for the restoration of Minority status of the university. The Convener of the Symposium and Acting President of the AMUSU, Tausif Alam said that the AMUSU will hold public meetings in different parts of the country to mobilize a mass support.

Noted Islamic scholar, Maulana Kalbe Jawwad of Lucknow, Maulana Aamir Rashadi Mdani, National President of Rashtriya Ulema Council, Dr. Tasleem Rehmani, President, Muslim Political Council of India, Dr. Abdul Mannan of Peace party, Professor Bhim Singh, President, Panthers’ Party, J&K, Saleem Peerzada, National President of Parcham Party of India, Shafiqur Rahman Barq, MP, Ilyas Azmi, Ex-MP and several former office bearers of the AMU Students’ Union expressed their views and declared their full support to the cause.
Prof. Bhim Singh, in his address, urged the students to keep away from politicians and ‘devils’ and believe in their own strength. He said that the minority character was the inherent right of this institution, which was snatched away from it. He said he had fought the battle for its restoration in 1965 and remained in jail for about eight months in this connection.
Shafiqur Rahman Barq, Member of Parliament, said that he had raised the issue of minority character of AMU in Lok Sabha and said that the Students’ Union should make their voice louder before the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
Farrukh Khan, former secretary of AMUSU said that this institution was born with minority character and it is an indispensable part of the University. He said that it would remain to be the soul of the age-old institution.
Khan urged the office bearers of the Students’ Union to educate the present generation of the students about this important issue so that every student is well aware of the minority character issue. He said that a constitutional amendment was needed to resolve the issue once and for all.
He also discussed the legal aspects of the matter and said that the 2005 judgment of the Allahabad High Court has ignored AMU’s essential character enshrined in the Parliamentary Act of 1920 and the Amu Amendment Act of 1981, which duly recognized its special character and clarified certain ambiguities forever.
Former Secretary of AMUSU and President, Parcham Party of India, Saleem Peerzada highlighted the history of movements for restoration of minority character. He said that this institution was established for the educational development of Muslims of India and it was not a ‘basement university’.
Former Vice President, Maazin Husain Zaidi said that AMU was an identity of Muslims of Indian subcontinent. He urged the Muslim community to come forward and extend their cooperation in making this drive a national movement.
Manzar Husain, Honorary Secretary of AMUSU welcomed the dignitaries and Mr. Tausif Alam proposed a vote of thanks.
