Bengaluru: CR Mohammed Imtiaz, National Executive Council member of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), has resigned from the party and joined the Indian National Congress (INC).
When contacted by TCN, Imtiaz, who is also the Chairman of Minorities Educational Institutions' Management Federation, confirmed the news, but declined to state the reason behind his decision to leave the party.
He also told TCN that he has joined the Congress party and will “actively participate in its activities.”
Imtiaz also talked about the disturbing tactic, he sees in political parties, where candidates belonging to the community are fielded against Muslim candidates from other parties, which he says will divide Muslim votes, reducing its power to influence political action.
He further added that, he wants Muslims to vote for one party, but abstained from suggesting which one.
SDPI was founded on July 29, 2009 with one of its stated objectives to empower minorities and backward castes. With major political parties wooing Muslim community with several development and empowerment schemes and with Muslim lobbies like Karnataka Muslim Muttahida Mahaz with its 28 member groups, announcing its unanimous support to the Congress party, it would be interesting to see how SDPI fare in elections.
