Deoband killing: State govt orders Rs. 5 lakh as compensation to Afzal’s family

Lucknow: State government had sanctioned a compensation of Rs 5 lakhs to the family of the deceased fruit vendor who died in Deoband on Tuesday. CM Akhilesh Yadav also expressed grief over the incident.

The fruit vendor identified as Afzal, a resident of Nechalgarh had allegedly died after struck by a baton by a policeman. He used to keep his fruit cart at MBD Chowk in Deoband. Soon after his death, a large crowd gathered on the spot and kept the dead body at the Sahranpur-Muzaffarnagar highway. Inspector Yashveer Chauhan tried to control things by using force but he was chased away by the mob. Later the mob resorted to vandalism and even assaulted the policemen. Some of them were thrashed by the mob.

DM and SSP too reached the scene. In late night IG Bhavesh Kumar too took round of the spot. Police then resorted to lathicharge to control the situation. A police jeep was
set on fire on Union trisection. Vehicle of former chairman, Ziauddin too was broken. The body was taken in possession by the police and sent for postmortem.

Afzal was very poor fruit vendor and had four children. His wife is now pregnant and there is no one to look after the family.

There were reports that a case has been registered against the erring policemen and three of them were suspended while the CO was transferred by state government on Wednesday.
