Ghaziabad : Police Tuesday said they were probing an explosion at a mosque in Ghaziabad district and a forensic team was checking the site.

The blast in the mosque in Dasna town occurred at about 10 p.m. Monday and damaged the main entrance gate and the plastering but no one was injured. Immediately after the explosion, senior police and civil officers including the district police chief and the district magistrate visited the spot.

"We have not found any substance. Neither pellets, nor any other article was found on the explosion site. The forensic team is studying the case," said Deputy Inspector General (Meerut Range) Zaki Ahmad.

"It seems some miscreants might be planning to disturb the peace through such acts because the motive does not seems to damage the building or execute a massacre because the time when the explosion took place was not suit for such designs. Normally people gather at prayer time but the explosion took place when there was no prayer time."

"But it is still a mystery. The forensic team is on the job and until their report is ready, nothing can be said conclusively," said Ahmad.

According to a source, an accidental explosion might have taken place due to the garbage dumped near the mosque containing carbide used to ripen fruits.

"A marriage procession passed near that time and the fire-crackers set of then might have ignited a fire in the dump which could have triggered an explosion. A reconstruction is being exercised to ascertain the truth before revealing officially," said the source.
