AMU students’ union election on Jan 31

Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University Students’ Union elections will be held on January 31. According to University notification issued by the Registrar, the election will be conducted in accordance with the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.

The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Lt. General (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah in his capacity as the Patron of the AMU Students’ Union has appointed Prof. Mohd. Shabbir, Department of Law as Chief Election Officer to conduct the elections of the AMU Students’ Union and four remaining representatives of students from concerned faculties, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences, Social Sciences and Law to the University Court.

The Chief Election Officer, Prof. Mohammad Shabbir has declared the election schedule. The election process will start from January 17, 2013. Polling will be held at faculty level on January 31, 2013 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with an interval of one hour from 1 pm to 2 pm. Counting of votes shall be carried in the office of Deans of respective faculties from 6:30 pm onwards on the same day. The Chief Election Officer will finally declare the results.

Prof. Shabbir said that these elections would follow “the Lyngdoh recommendations in letter and spirit”. He said that “only bonafide students, adhering to a strict age protocol, will be permitted to contest these elections. The upper age limit for Research Scholars, who will be permitted to contest, is 30. For those in Postgraduate classes, the age limit is 25, for professional courses it is 24 and for graduates it is 22”.

Any student “who has a proven criminal charge against him or who has faced disciplinary action by the University authorities, will not be allowed to contest”, he added.

Women’s college’s union:

AMU VC also appointed Dr. Sheila Shahab, Women’s College as Chief Election Officer to conduct the election of the undergraduate students of Women’s College for the academic session.
