Guwahati: Senior Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D Raja said that the Narendra Modi government must be answerable to the Judiciary for the fake encounter that killed 19-year-old Mumbra college student Ishrat Jahan in 2004.
“CBI has collected some credible evidences and accordingly CBI filed an affidavit and now it’s before the judiciary and judiciary will have to monitor and pursue the case. If Modi’s administration is responsible, it must be held and made accountable and answerable to the judiciary,” the CPI National Secretary told reporters during his Guwahati visit on Friday.

Raja, though believed that CBI has been misused by various political parties, stressed on making the Modi government accountable. “During that time under Modi’s leadership such massacre could not have been taken place in Gujarat in 2002 followed by fake encounters. Now, the encounter was proved to be a fake one. As CBI has come up with credible evidence it’s up to the Modi government to explain the reality,” Raja who is in Guwahati to meet his party people added.
He also advocated for at least functional autonomy for CBI which is the premiere investigating agency of the country and a supreme authority to monitor CBI.
“CBI being the main investigative agency we have in our country many seek its help. But unfortunately it’s being misused by both the Congress and BJP. It’s not confined to a political party only. I think CBI should be allowed to work freely. CBI must act impartially and objectively,” Raja further said.
In its chargesheet, the CBI said Ishrat Jahan was branded a terrorist out to kill Modi and was shot along with other three in ‘cold blood’.
