New Delhi : A probe has been ordered into a firing incident during a clash between protesters and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district in which at least four people lost their lives, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said here Thursday.
"I have ordered an inquiry to be conducted without any loss of time to ascertain the circumstances which led to the firing," Shinde said.
Expressing regret over the incident, Shinde said: "The loss of lives in this incident is particularly saddening and I offer my deep condolences to the bereaved families."
He also appealed to the people to maintain peace.
"I assure that any use of excessive force or irresponsible action will be dealt with strictly. I appeal to the people to maintain peace and allow normalcy to be restored."
Alleging desecration of a mosque and beating up of an Imam by some Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, a group of protesters stormed a BSF camp in Gool town of Ramban district Thursday. About two dozen people, including some BSF personnel, were injured in the clashes.
