Guwahati: Even as the government of India and Assam are trying their ‘best’ to solve the insurgency problem by inviting the militant groups for peace talk, here is a group of surrendered ULFA militants who repent their action of returning to the mainstream. Raj Kumar Duwara and his fellow former militants have been forced to knock the governor’s door seeking his intervention to fulfil the demands which were promised by the government.
Coming under the banner of All Assam Surrendered ULFA Samitee (AASUS) which has more than 3300 members on Tuesday met Assam governor JB Patnaik asking him to put pressure on the government to address several serious problems of the state which could eventually solve the insurgency problem.

“We want to ask the government why the promises made by them were not fulfilled. Such negligence of the government has made us repent why did we surrender? We feel we should have continued our arms struggle. It makes no difference today that we have surrendered. The government is just using us rather than trying to bring a permanent solution,” said an angry Duwara who gave up arms way back in 1992.
They also claimed that they gave up the arms of their own in the hope of bringing peace in the state and solution to all the problems for which they had chosen the violent path. “We were neither arrested not were put pressure to lay down the arms. But the government has no respect for our feelings towards peace,” added the former political organizer of ULFA.
The Sivasagar born militant who had joined ULFA in 1985 also said that state youths still joining the outfit as the government’s approach is not that encouraging towards bringing solution. Besides, they wished a speedy solution from the peace “There is no proper ways to rehabilitate the former militants so that they can also lead a decent life. Moreover, the efforts should be made from both the ways to bring a solution,” he added.
They also mentioned of erosion and infiltration problems of the state to be solved in the memorandum which was handed over to the governor.
