Guwahati: The railway connection to the upper Assam was disrupted as violent protestors destroyed some portion of railway track at a place between Diphu and Doldoli, leading to police firing in the area even as curfew on imposed for the second consecutive day at Karbi Anglong headquarter in Assam.
The protesters who have been demanding a separate state for the hill districts also destroyed and burnt several government offices and public properties. The prominent offices which were damaged included the All India Radio (AIR) and a branch office of the Asam Sahitya Sabha (ASS), the apex literary body of Assam and several others on Thursday.
DIG (Central Range) P. Saloi said that adequate security arrangement has been made to avoid more such type of mob violence. “The curfew is still on and we are trying our best to control the situation. More security forces are on the way to assist the police in tackling the situation,” said Saloi.
One person, who received injuries during the violence on Wednesday succumbed to his injuries late night, police said. On Wednesday, the protesters had also attacked the houses of Lok Sabh MP from Diphu Lok Sabha constituency Biren Sing Ingty, the MLA Bidya Sing Engleng and Chief Executive Member of the council Joyram Engleng.
