New Delhi: A five-day workshop from August 21 to 25, 2013 was organized by the Department of Urdu, Jamia Millia Islamia under its Tagore Research and Training Scheme funded by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India to translate Tagore’s novel Gora, his selected letters, dramas and children’s literature into Urdu.
The workshop was attended by Bangla-Urdu scholars from Kolkata, Mr. Qaiser Shameem, Mr. M Ali (is the translator of Tagore’s Gora under this scheme), Mr. Fahim Anwer, Prof. Sulaiman Khurshid, Dr. Nusrat Jahan, Mr. Sayeed Azmi and Dr. Mushtaq Anjum including the teachers of the Department of Urdu.
Prof. S.M. Sajid, Offg. Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia graced the session as the Chief Guest while Prof. Wahajudding Alvi presided over it. Prof. Sajid welcomed the scholars from West Bengal and praised the fast work progress of the Tagore Research and Translation Scheme.
Prof Sajid said “for translation a translator has to dip down into the soul of the original writer. It is important for one to have a great experience and observation of society”.
The Valedictory Session of the workshop was held on Agusut 25, 2013 and it was presided over by Prof. Wahajuddin Alvi, Head, Department of Urdu, Jamia Millia Islamia.
During the course of the workshop a poetic meet was organized. Among poets who participated in the poetic meet were senior poets Qaisar Shameem, famous critic Shamim Hanfi, Khalid Mahmood, Sehpar Rasool, Farhat Ehsas, Ahmed Mahfooz, Suhail Ahmad Farooqi, Mushtaq Anjum, Fahim Anwar, Adil Hayat, Khalid Mubashshir, mashkoor Moini and Sajid Zaki Fahmi.
