Aligarh: A current student of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), who has been advocating for restoration of the minority status of the university has received threats.

Md Pervez Siddiqui, a B.Com student at the University and General Secretary of an independent AMU students’ organization “Sir Syed Minority Foundation of India,” found a sealed envelope in his room on Saturday afternoon that contained a letter threatening him to kill, if they do not postpone their proposed dharna at Janatar Mantar in New Delhi in December end.

Scanned copy of the letter.

Perwez, along with other students, has been meeting several political leaders across the country, under the banner of “Sir Syed Minority Foundation of India” to garner their support for the restoration of the minority status of AMU.

The letter addressed to Pervez Siddiqui (misspelled as Parwej Siddiki), has been sent by one Ranjeet Agarwal of Aligarh, through Indian post office. It reads, “Leave the issue of minority character of AMU. If you will do the dharna at Jantar Mantar and if you will not leave this issue then I can kill you.”

Perwez told TCN, “We had announced a dharna at Janatar Mantar, but since AMU VC had written to the HRD Ministry on the minority issue, we were waiting for their response to finalize our date of protest.”

Meanwhile, an FIR has been registered and police in investigating into the matter.
