Kolkata: Campaign against the Aligarh Muslim University’s Murshidabad Campus suffered a major setback after the judgement of hon’ble Calcutta High Court dismissing a public interest litigation (PIL) that asked for stopping the work on AMU campus.

The Calcutta High Court dismissed the PIL on 26th February, 2013. A lawyer Kanad Naskar of Kolkata filed a case against AMU campus in Murshidabad. On behalf of Kanad Laskar Advocate Kaushik Chandra argued in the Calcutta High court that, According to Aligarh Muslim University act 1920 there was no provision to establish any branch or campus radius of 25 km from the main campus. So, they demanded immediately stopping the construction works of AMU campus in Murshidabad and cancelling the project.

Aligarh Muslim University’s lawyer Advocate Joydeep Kar pleaded that Executive committee of the Aligarh Muslim university have a right to change policy and can take any decision for the AMU. Executive Committee decided to establish AMU campus not only Murshidabad but Malappuram, Kerala and Kishanganj, Bihar also.

West Bengal Government has already given the nearly 300 acres land at Ahiran, under the Suti Police station of Murshidabad campus. Advocate Kar said, Murshidabad is a backward district in terms of education.

After the hearing all the petitioner and respondent lawyers Hon’ble Chief Justice Arun kumar Mishra and Justice joymalyo Bagchi’s Division bench declared that, the PIL case against the AMU campus in Murshidabad has been dismissed and ended the case. Now there is no hurdle to progress of AMU Murshidabad campus.

TCN talked to Dr Md Junaid, Director In-Charge of AMU Murshidabad Campus. He expressed his happiness at the dismissal of the PIL. He said, senior lawyer Joydeep Kar along with advocate Somnath Basu represented AMU Murshidabad Campus well. “After the High Court Judgment all the hurdles have been removed.
