New Delhi: Najeeb Jung, the Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has injected “terror and fear” in the campus that has “led to sharp decline in the academic health” this historical central university, alleged Member of Parliament Sabir Ali.

Najeeb Jung, Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia.
Najeeb Jung, a former IAS officer was appointed VC in September 2009. His autocratic way of functioning has come under severe criticism from teachers, staff, and students. So far he has suspended or terminated 25 employees of the university including 15 teachers. Many students have also been suspended and or fined, some for using RTI to expose corruption in Jamia administration.
There has been no students’ union elections in Jamia since 2006 but that has not stopped the University from collecting union dues. When RTI activist and Jamia student Afroz Alam Sahil asked an RTI question about union election, he was harassed and asked to withdraw. University refused to answer citing laughable excuses. Similarly, Mobashshir Sarwar had to get help from Delhi High court when he was expelled from Jamia school without explanation and due process.

JMI students were on hunger strike in 2011 for a right to appear in the examination.
Sabir Ali, who is a Rajya Sabha MP of Janta Dal (United) in his letter issued to the media said that Jung is “running the administration on the basis of ad-hoc appointment.” Ali lists that ad-hoc appointments includes such important positions as Pro-Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Controller of Examinations, Dean of Students Welfare, Finance Officer, Proctor, Dean of the Faculties, and Directors of Centres including Mass Communication Research Centre.
Mr. Sabir Ali is expected to raise this issue in Rajya Sabha on Monday. He is expected to demand that all disciplinary actions taken by the VC to be reviewed and suspensions revoked.
Jamia officials have been contacted for response to this story.
