British Professor to deliver Sir Syed Memorial Lecture on Feb 4 in AMU

Aligarh: Professor Gordon Campbell, Professor of Renaissance Studies, University of Leicester, UK will deliver the Sir Syed Memorial Lecture on “The Inheritance of Sir Syed: A View from the West” on February 4, 2013 at the Assembly Hall, Z.H. College of Engineering and Technology. The lecture is organized by the Sir Syed Academy, Aligarh Muslim University.

Professor Campbell has been closely associated with the delivery of education in the Muslim world as the founding chair of the Consortium of British Universities in Iraq and Saudi Arabia. He has published extensively on English Literature, Cultural History, Arts, Architecture, Biblical Studies, Classical Antiquity, Garden History, Legal History, Historical Theology and the Islamic World. Presently he is engaged in writing a book entitled “Contemporary Islam” to be published by the Oxford University Press. He has a keen interest in Islam and the Muslim world.

In this lecture, he has identified and analyzed Sir Syed’s thought and the issues and problems confronting Muslim education in particular and higher education in general. His insightful critique of the Aligarh Movement, especially his call for revitalizing Sir Syed’s mission is highly relevant. His tribute to Sir Syed’s genius, as documented in this lecture, will be read with much profit by everyone interested in Sir Syed studies, Muslim education and the Aligarh Muslim University.

During his stay in Aligarh, Professor Campbell will also deliver lectures on Milton and Bible at the Department of English and give a talk on Education in the Muslim World at Ibne Sina Academy.
