Jammu : Jammu and Kashmir Wednesday constituted a committee to recommend amendments that would make the existing laws dealing with the offences against women more stringent, an official said.
State Law Minister Mir Saifullah, chairing a high-level meeting, constituted a four-member committee headed by the state's advocate general to "submit its report within a week's time", the official said.
To make more stringent laws to deal with offences against women in Jammu and Kashmir, the law department has also sought suggestions from legal experts, civil society members and academicians.
"The committee has also been asked to study the Justice J.S. Verma Committee report," Saifullah said. The Justice Verma panel was set up by the central government in the wake of the national outrage over the gruesome gang-rape of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi Dec 16, who died 13 days later.
The issues regarding the bail provision, time period for probe, trial period, classification of cases, strengthening of women police stations and their jurisdiction were discussed in the meeting.
