Ministers to share stage at international conference on “Islam and Modernity” in Jamia

New Delhi: Zakir Husain Institute of Islamic Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia in collaboration with Istanbul Foundation for Science and Culture, Turkey is going to organize a 3-day International Conference on “Islam and Modernity: The Perspective of Bediuzzaman Said Nursi”.

The seminar will be formally inaugurated by K. Rahman Khan, Union Minister for Minority Affairs. Tariq Anwar, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries, will be the Chief Guest in the Inaugural Function. E Ahamed, Minister of State for External Affairs, will deliver the presidential remarks.

Bediuzzaman Said Nursi (1876-1960), the most influential Islamic scholar in modern Turkish history, is the inspiration behind the hugely popular Nur community. Guided by his masterwork, the Risal-i Nur, Nursi’s followers shun political ambition, focusing instead on a revival of personal faith through study, self-reform and service of others.

There will be a broad deliberation from different disciplines on the following topics of the seminar:

 A Critical Analysis of Modernity
 A Critical Analysis of Western Civilization
 Is Modernity Compatible with the Teachings of Islam?
 Appropriate Solutions to Problems Related to Modernity
 The Necessity of the Reinterpretation of the Islamic Sciences and Culture
 The Question of an Identity of Islamic Modernity
 The Ethical Dimensions of Modernity, its Connection with Religion and Moral Values

The Inauguration Session of the Seminar is scheduled to be held on February 7at 4 pm in Dr. M.A. Ansari Auditorium of the university.

Prof. Burak Akcapar, Turkish Ambassador to India and Prof. S.M. Rashid, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia will be the Guests of Honour on this occasion.

Dr. Ibrahim Ozdemir, Vice-Chancellor of Hasan Kalyoncu University, Turkey and Ihsan Kasim Salihi, IFSC, Turkey will also address the audience.

The technical sessions will be held on February 8 and 9 in the Conference Hall of FTK-Centre for information Technology from 10 AM-6 PM.
